The patents and inventions featured in this article are truly just a sampling of the many designs and innovations by various futon inventors who had the vision to create and design furniture in an all new light. The futon industry itself has grown up quite a bit since its humble beginnings in the early 80's and many futons you'll see today are based on these early concepts and designs. I found it fascinating to study the evolution of the futon from a simple tri-fold design into the sofa looking frames of today. The innovations that came from these designs really helped to move forward this line of furniture that we know today. Next time you see a futon frame I hope you'll think about these inventors and the legacy they've left on this furniture category.
Why then you ask do futon retailers continue to show these on their showroom floors if they know they are a substandard offering? An interesting question. Futon retailers are often specialty stores that provide a dozen or more futon frames. Be it an online store a physical brick and mortar store. The majority of frames you'll see are made of wood and are offered with various arm designs and usually a half a dozen or more mattress options. Hundreds of upholstered and fabric covers exist for covering the mattresses of these frames. These retailers are serious about offering consumers everything available in the world of futons. Sometimes they take this quite literally. I would expect that it was the same reason our store carried them. We wanted to show everything available and didn't want mass merchants showing the product and have a customer walk in wanting one and not being able to get it.
Futons usually have exposed frames and that implies that the frame material and design is something you have to think about when shopping for cheap futons. Metal is desired because of its longevity, and its inexpensive nature. When you are looking for a classier outlook, there are wooden frames, although these are somewhat more expensive. If you are decor conscious, you can explore the different finishes you get, to find something that will complement your decor.
