There was a time when cheap futons for sale were regarded as college furniture, and it was nearly a mortal sin to have it at home. But times have changed. Admittedly, there are better more expensive pieces of furniture you could get, but that doesn't mean you disregard futons completely. If anything, they act as a great space saver, giving you a comfortable sleeping place, without taking up all the floor space. You get a sofa and a bed, without having to buy them individually.
As we have already mentioned, futon frames need reinforcement. The more reinforcement a futon has the more likely it will stand the constant abuse of friends and family. After all, futon frames are not only mechanisms with moving parts, they must also support the weight of your futon mattress and people as well. A general rule is that you should look for as much reinforcement as possible. You could simplify things by keeping a scorecard and counting off the number of angle brackets, stress supports and rub guards a given futon comes equipped with.
The first problem with black metal frames is the round metal bars that make up the seat and back sections of these frames. Where as wood futon frames are using flat slats, black metal frames have hollow round bars. Thinner mattresses would slide through the gaps between the round bars. On wood futons this was never a problem. The other issue with the hollow bars is that if enough weight was placed on a spot they would begin to bend. The issue became so bad that a 90 day warranty was put in place by most manufacturers of these frames.
