The other issue would be in the way people could feel the bars through these thin mattresses. Because the bars were round and the mattresses had nothing in the way of support, you could lay on the mattress and feel each bar across the mattress. For some this may have been all they could afford in the way of futon. Unfortunately the import manufacturers of these frames and mattresses weren't helping anyone to get a comfortable sofa bed with the materials being used.
If you're after this kind of futon couch, there are some terms you'll need to know. First of all there's the bi-fold mattress, and these are the ones best used for sofa to bed convertibles. There are also the tri-folding ones which are longer (giving you more sleeping area), and allow you to fold it up in thirds, allowing you to store them in a closet when not in use.
Metal futon frames are constructed from hollow metal tubes. The arms are hollow and pocket welds are welded onto these arms with which to attach stretcher rails. Steel hinges are attached to the inside of the arms and hollow metal seat and back racks are connected to the hinges using regular screws. The problems start in the seat section. The hollow tubes and spot welded bars that make up the foundation of the seat section are prone to breaking loose off of the seat section. The spot welding is not sufficient enough to keep these bars from breaking loose and are a result of the low cost approach of building these decks. Another issue that results from the hollow tube of the seat section is that it is prone to bending from normal use. The hinges that are attached to the arms suffer the same fate as over time customers have brought these in to stores showing them bent out.
October of 1991 saw another group of inventors including Mark S. Barton, Kurt J. Bandach and Mark E. Schlichter introduce an interesting concept of a pivoting pawl as they referred to it. This was basically a specially designed block that would hang on the seat section that would engage against a step located on the back rest and using gravitational force influences the pawl to both hang unengaged when the futon is in an upright position and to engage when the seat is lifted and the pawl engages against the step to allow the frame to be operated while standing in front and returns the futon from a bed position back into a seating position. This patent was assigned to August Lotz Co., Inc. who implemented this design into their successful line of futon products. This marked an interesting approach to frame conversion as now the frame was facilitating the movement back into a sofa position by having pawls engage into steps designed into the back rest of the frame.
A furniture like this is often used in houses with spare rooms, like a TV room accoutrement. This space saver type of furniture has good appeal not only on youngsters but also in grown-ups. Because not only it saves so much space because of its convertibility, but those ones made up with quality are durable and made up of good materials that are very cozy to use.
