A furniture like this is often used in houses with spare rooms, like a TV room accoutrement. This space saver type of furniture has good appeal not only on youngsters but also in grown-ups. Because not only it saves so much space because of its convertibility, but those ones made up with quality are durable and made up of good materials that are very cozy to use.
One of the earliest futon patents I was able to locate was for Nikita Grigoriev who filed for a futon patent in 1983 (Patent Number 4538308) for what he called \"Convertible Furniture\". The drawings represent what we today would call a tri-fold frame which uses 3 flat sections that make up the seating and sleeping portions of the frame and work in conjunction with each other to go from sofa to bed. I found it interesting how he described the operation of a futon as a piece of furniture which is convertible from a bed to a sofa which utilizes the geometry of its component parts to facilitate conversion from one mode (sofa) to another mode (bed). I think this abstract statement by Mr. Grigoriev does very well in explaining the nature of futon furniture and how they function.
I've been in working in furniture for many years. I'm still approached by people who say they're looking for a piece of furniture that can go into a tight space or down stairs into rooms that are hard to reach with tough corners. Leather sofas and upholstered sofas can't fit and they don't want a bunch of chairs filling the space. This isn't really unusual. Many homes may have been designed with hard to navigate hallways or basements that initially weren't meant to be finished. There is a specific category of furniture that works great for these situations however.
