There are alternative types of furniture that can be placed into hard to reach places. These don't have to be uncomfortable mass merchant futons either. Visit your specialty sleep store or futon store for a full line of quality wood futon frames and mattresses. You'll also discover hundreds of fabrics that are available to be zipped on over your mattress. Many of these are upholstery materials which can give you the look and feel of conventional furniture.
Having worked in retail and having worked in furniture stores carrying futons. I can honestly say that as a retailer it is very frustrating to know that stores still carry low end black metal frames. My intentions in this article are not to be harsh but I really hope retailers figure out that low end products made to hit a particular price point are not doing consumers or themselves any great service. Consumers deserve quality well made products at reasonable prices based on the materials and labor that went into that product. When this doesn't happen expectations aren't met. Disappointment and dissatisfaction soon follow and the consumer is left with a negative feeling towards the product. The intent of this article was to bring forth the experiences I've had with this product line not only from having retailed it but from what customers have shared with me about these products. I feel strongly that black metal futon frames should be avoided by both retailers and consumers alike. If you've had a negative experience with these frames I would encourage you to not judge the entire futon industry by these particular products. If you're a consumer I encourage you to shop a futon retailer or futon specialty store and discover the \"real\" world of futons and what they have to offer for both you and your home.
Rub guards, commonly referred to as striker plates are a good thing to look for as well. These metal plates keep the wood wearing away where two piece of wood come into contact while in motion. These are usually located on the front and rear stretcher rails. The rear stretcher rail must absorb the impact of the back deck when it drops down while the front cross rail must endure the rubbing of the seat deck while it slides back and forth. The metal plates help to buffer the stretcher rails from this abuse.
Wooden futon frames come in a variety of styles, colors and sizes. Although pinewood futon frames dominated the market for many years, hardwood futon frame prices have continued to fall making them more prevalent and affordable. Although logic might suggest that hardwood futons are more indestructible than pine wood frames, there are many hardwood frames on the market that are more prone to catastrophic failure than others. However, with some basic knowledge about wooden futon frame construction, you will have more confidence when you are comparing models and prices.
Check the width of the slats they are supporting. The slats are the multiple short boards that span the seat and back deck in a ladder-like design that are usually only visible when the mattress is removed. Are the futon slats wide or narrow?
