Futons used to be associated with low end furniture and low quality. However, futons have gained in popularity as well as style in recent years. There are now a number of high quality wood and metal frame futons and futon beds that make excellent design choices for a number of uses in the home. Futons work wonderfully in a den or informal seating arrangement around the home. Wood frames usually look better when grouped with high end furnishings, but some metal frames look best with contemporary or modern style furniture.
Futons as a category were born almost 25 years ago in the form of wood frames. These frames were simple and offered conversion from a sofa to bed by operation of the frame. Wood frame designs advanced much over the years and eventually led to wood futon frames that looked like conventional furniture. Many of these pieces of furniture borrowed from real world furniture construction techniques in the form of doweled construction, French dovetail joints and steel on steel hardware connections offering greater quality and flexibility in design and quality. The workmanship of these frames can easily be seen in the higher end models offered today and justifies the retail pricing you see for these pieces as being of the highest quality available in this category of furniture.
Still, it is important to remember that futons are not only dual purpose pieces of furniture,-- they are also mechanisms that require added reinforcement. For this reason, the smarter manufacturers have reinforced their futon frames with various metal brackets and support beams called stress supports to make their futons even more durable. These companies to brag about the beneficial features of their futon frames which makes they consumer's quest easier. These companies supply product specifications list which is a good place to start your research about a particular futon frame you are interested in buying.
The primary purpose of a futon is to be a dual-purpose piece of furniture, one part sofa, and one part bed. They are ideally suited for those that are working with limited space or are looking for an inexpensive alternative to more traditional furniture designs. They are widely available through just about every furniture retailer in the country and can be found in styles that fit into most modern design categories, from contemporary to mission. This kind of variety almost guarantees that there is a futon design for every décor, as well as for every budget.
Some futons have no stress supports while others have many. How many stress supports does the futon you like have? Futons with eight to twelve stress supports overall are generally better quality than those with only four or none. Most companies will be sure to include the number of stress supports if their futons have at least eight.
