However, what do you do if your apartment's too small for a decent sized bed? Bedding can take up a lot of essential space and it can be a really big problem if you're living in a one-room flat. This is where futons will come in really useful.

They are ideally suited for those that are working with limited space or are looking for an inexpensive alternative to more traditional furniture designs. They are widely available through just about every furniture retailer in the country and can be found in styles that fit into most modern design categories, from contemporary to mission. This kind of variety almost guarantees that there is a futon design for every décor, as well as for every budget.

Having worked in furniture for many years I have always believed strongly in that you get what you pay for or that the value of what you're buying is in direct relation to the quality of the product and the price placed on those goods or services. I also believe that some products are capable of giving an entire line of furniture a bad name due to their specific lack of quality and unjustly so because one type of product doesn't represent the qualities of an entire line of furniture. No better example of this can be said than what black metal futon frames have done against the futon industry in the last 10 years. In this article I'll explain my position about the negative aspects these metal frames provide and why it would be best for consumers and retailers alike to move away from these frames that are giving the industry a bad name.

These came with imported mattresses that were constructed to be no more than 5\" to 6\" thick and contained ground up textile or fabric scrap. Various colored outer coverings that were not removable were tufted around the mattress materials making these difficult to clean. They retailed very cheap and individuals on a budget recognized the futon design from higher end wood models and felt these were indeed bargains since futons had a very good reputation for longevity and quality construction. Unfortunately these black tubular frames would begin to give futons a bad name.

You may not be used to the design elements or particularly care for them for your space, but you can adopt some of the concepts to help create the serene space of your desires. It isn't just about having futon mattresses in your space and nothing on the walls. This is simply boring, not esthetically pleasing. Japanese design also takes into consideration the placement of objects. Borrowing from Feng Shui traditions and natural elements, this style is decidedly balanced.

Know which style of futon are you looking for, parallel it to your tastes and also your child's preferences. Futon may come in conventional or modern options. If you want to go with the more traditional appeal, you can select the ones with frames made from hardwood. If you prefer a modern and conventional style, go with metal or just simply have the combination if you want to have both features. Futon covers may also be important, you may want to have it patterned after the room's design or get one that is more eye-catching.

This futon patent featured drawings which included an image depicting routed out grooves in the sides of the arms facilitating a sliding nylon roller that would move in the routed out channel in the arm. Much like other futon patents, designs were beginning to shift towards futons being built with side arms, two connecting rails and a seat and back section. However futon bi-fold designs such as these weren't the only bi-fold designs out there.

Often referred to as easy upright, automatic upright, and half a dozen other terms, this feature makes conversion from bed back to sofa a much easier task than in the past. Usually, the seat deck is used in some fashion to create a lever. When you push down on the seat, the back comes up saving your back. This can be especially advantageous to those who do not have a lot of upper body strength. Heavier mattresses can make this feature a desirable addition, but this system can put some adverse stress on your futon frame if it is not designed properly or if the system is too complex. Ask your dealer to explain in detail about these features when in doubt.
Cecilia Velazquez Futon, 2017-08-02 14:01:18. The first problem with black metal frames is the round metal bars that make up the seat and back sections of these frames. Where as wood futon frames are using flat slats, black metal frames have hollow round bars. Thinner mattresses would slide through the gaps between the round bars. On wood futons this was never a problem. The other issue with the hollow bars is that if enough weight was placed on a spot they would begin to bend. The issue became so bad that a 90 day warranty was put in place by most manufacturers of these frames.

While not as common as the other problems this issue still led to the failure of many black metal frames. The hinges were attached to the arms of the futon frames with two bolts and two nuts. While this design was OK the hinges themselves would fail when too much weight was applied to one side or the other. These would also bend out rendering them useless in the operation of the futon.
Georgia Henderson Futon, 2017-08-01 15:22:25. In 1990 Gary Shaffield & Robert Fireman filed a futon design patent utilizing a tension spring to facilitate movement from position to position. (Patent Number 4996730). This design was very similar in look to the 1985 patent involving Robert Fireman and many of the structural components and aesthetics of these two designs featured in both patents when compared were similar. The design of this frame however focused on the legs built into the seat section that when pulled out would engage and then when the frame was retracted featured a stop that helped prevent the legs from becoming entangled with the base. Incorporated into this design was a tension spring that helped with the operation of the frame. Many early futons would go through refinements in design and function and this is often how improvements in frames would be created and how they found their way into the products we would purchase. It should be noted that in my studies of futon patents many other patents in futon designs are held by Robert Fireman in both tri-fold and bi-fold designs. He is considered one of the early pioneers in futon design throughout the industry.
